Juno and a Candy girl

Snap 1. Probably you should have seen the movie Juno by now. If not, you should find sometime to see it. I fell in love with Ellen page because of the movie.

Snap 2. I found this book in the library.. it is called “Candy girl - A year in the life of an unlikely stripper” (now.. don’t get your instincts to sense something wrong here..). The tagline of the book might sound (for some of us) like something too perverse, but it is a brilliantly written, geeky comedy. It is a memoir about a girl who wanted to do stripping just for the sake of it. You should find time to read this too.

If you are wondering what both these snaps lead to.. the answer would be Diablo Cody. She wrote the original screenplay for Juno and Candy girl is her memoir. The funny thing this she was a clerk at an ad-agency in Minneapolis before she started the act and now shez an Oscar winner and writing screenplay for a Stephen Speilberg TV show.

You never know where your life takes you to.

When is the best time to start?

There was an article in the web about a 6th grade school girl organizing small games in her group, collecting money for the event and at end of the day, she gave the proceedings (around 800 dollars) for the improvement of children’s lives in poor countries.

Another girl had her own series of greeting cards, sold them and donated the proceedings for a similar cause.

When do you think we should start spending time not for ourself, but for others too. Most of our lives goes like this.. we grow up, get a decent education, get a decent job, marry someone, populate the universe, try harder and harder to fill the niche gaps in our life and then one day you will see angels flying pass by (..assuming there is one). Is this is what we can do most with our lives? Certainly not. There is more and there should be more.

John wood resigned his high profile job in Microsoft to educate childrens in Nepal and Cambodia. Jacqueline Novogratz left her job in Wall street and started helping women in Rwanda, Kenya and in other developing countries. A recent Business week article said that IIM (Indian Institute of Management) graduates are more becoming social entrepreneurs in India or joining not-for-profit organizations with 30% or less of a salary that their fellow peers are offered.

There are about 4 billion people in the world under poverty. There are some 1 billion people who are illiterate. Individuals like above can change a community or communities around. If we are to change the world, it has to be a movement. It has to be something like what Buddha did to mankind with his Enlightment. It has to be something like what Gandhi did to India with his non-violence. It has to be a movement that you and I and everyone should be part of.

Isn’t “now” a good time to start?

Steve Jobsian philosophy

His words from one of the recent Fortune issues.

Life is brief, and then you die, you know? We don’t get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. So it better be damn good. It better be worth it.

The entire article can be found here.

Here is something more. His speech at Stanford couple of years ago. Impressive!

Wii

I wanted to buy a Wii to play this

but I got a big urge to buy when I saw this

and so Toys R us is shipping me one now…

P.S. I was having a nightmare when trying to include the Guitar Hero 3 ad as a embedded video here. For some reason my wordpress doesn’t seem to work the way the coders actually expected it to..

Update - I believe it is actually an issue with Firefox and flash videos (not the youtube video but the TED one). For some reason it gets corrupted when wordpress tries to display TED video object in Firefox. IE seems to be fine. Anyway, I have both the videos as a ‘link’ now. It shouldn’t be a problem anymore.

My theme and my fight for a “pretty” URL

For the past couple of days I have been trying to change my lazy, uncool.. in other words the ‘default’ Wordpress theme in my blog. I have actually setup a local web server in my laptop.. just for trying out things before I put them in my online blog. I should have tried atleast couple of dozens of them in these 2 days.. but everything had an issue or other..

If all were fine too, I couldn’t make the pretty URL funda work on the theme..

So until I find a theme and a template that works for me.. you could see some crazy things happening in the blog.. especially in the logistics of the controls in the sidebar.  Forgive me.

Itz getting hot!

I am sure you would have heard about Global Warming in a way or other and I believe you understand the problems we face if we are to allow it to happen. Unfortunately this is not going to wait for our next generation but we will be feeling the impact starting in a decade or two.

Last year the Nobel Peace prize was awarded to people who made an impact by spreading the idea of Global warming. This act alone explains how serious the consequences are going to be if we are not doing enough.

The latest UK report published couple of days ago has warned that this could lead to a 3rd world war.

Here is the latest video from Al Gore which he presented in TED 2008 earlier this year. The universe is getting hot more faster than it was predicted last time. We are getting fried faster, people.

I believe one individual alone cannot make this world a better place. It has to be a movement combining countries and cultures. I am doing that (..atleast to an extent) in my small world.

Are you?
