Carbon tax

In brief, here is what it is (Source - Wikipedia).

“A carbon tax is a tax on emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.” The full text can be found here.

So if you are using any of the fossil fuels which in the process of combustion forms carbon di-oxide, then you will be taxed to the amount of carbon di-oxide that you emit into the atmosphere. The idea behind this kind of taxation system is that the industries that still uses these fossil fuels will start thinking about the alternative fuels that don’t pollute our universe. The problem with this kind of system is that (which I believe) it will take lot more years to achieve the goals that is expected out of the system and implementing this kind of system in less energy conscious countries (which is many) ranges from very  difficult to highly unlikely. Unless the whole world tunes for this cause, we are not going see any good results.

So what can we do?
We need to increase the scalability of the reach of this message to the millions thru Internet. It is the ultimate message protocol we have that can reach billions. It has to be a movement something like Pangea day.

Can we start one?

When is the best time to start?

There was an article in the web about a 6th grade school girl organizing small games in her group, collecting money for the event and at end of the day, she gave the proceedings (around 800 dollars) for the improvement of children’s lives in poor countries.

Another girl had her own series of greeting cards, sold them and donated the proceedings for a similar cause.

When do you think we should start spending time not for ourself, but for others too. Most of our lives goes like this.. we grow up, get a decent education, get a decent job, marry someone, populate the universe, try harder and harder to fill the niche gaps in our life and then one day you will see angels flying pass by (..assuming there is one). Is this is what we can do most with our lives? Certainly not. There is more and there should be more.

John wood resigned his high profile job in Microsoft to educate childrens in Nepal and Cambodia. Jacqueline Novogratz left her job in Wall street and started helping women in Rwanda, Kenya and in other developing countries. A recent Business week article said that IIM (Indian Institute of Management) graduates are more becoming social entrepreneurs in India or joining not-for-profit organizations with 30% or less of a salary that their fellow peers are offered.

There are about 4 billion people in the world under poverty. There are some 1 billion people who are illiterate. Individuals like above can change a community or communities around. If we are to change the world, it has to be a movement. It has to be something like what Buddha did to mankind with his Enlightment. It has to be something like what Gandhi did to India with his non-violence. It has to be a movement that you and I and everyone should be part of.

Isn’t “now” a good time to start?

Itz getting hot!

I am sure you would have heard about Global Warming in a way or other and I believe you understand the problems we face if we are to allow it to happen. Unfortunately this is not going to wait for our next generation but we will be feeling the impact starting in a decade or two.

Last year the Nobel Peace prize was awarded to people who made an impact by spreading the idea of Global warming. This act alone explains how serious the consequences are going to be if we are not doing enough.

The latest UK report published couple of days ago has warned that this could lead to a 3rd world war.

Here is the latest video from Al Gore which he presented in TED 2008 earlier this year. The universe is getting hot more faster than it was predicted last time. We are getting fried faster, people.

I believe one individual alone cannot make this world a better place. It has to be a movement combining countries and cultures. I am doing that (..atleast to an extent) in my small world.

Are you?
